OUR READING SCHOOL

Reading in School

St. Peter’s CE Primary School uses the Rising Stars reading scheme to support children in their journey to becoming a fluent reader and enriching the reading curriculum with captivating fiction and non-fiction books. Children will start their reading journey with beautiful wordless and first words books and then begin to build firm foundations in reading with fresh and phonically decodable books which support our ‘Monster Phonics’ scheme.

At St. Peter’s CE Primary school, we recognise that reading development is closely linked to that of writing, for it is when given opportunities to reflect upon and discuss the texts they encounter, that children truly understand the writing process. Through this approach, children are able to develop an awareness of the relationship between author and reader. In our school, we strive to make this link clear, by providing learning opportunities which are based on quality texts that engage the children, by immersing them in a language rich environment.

Our intent is that children leave our school at the end of Year 6, having established a love of reading and having experienced a wide range of texts and genres. By the end of Year 6, children will:

· Develop positive attitudes to reading, that ensure reading is an enjoyable and meaningful experience

· Use reading as a fundamental part of all curriculum planning and development

· Read with confidence, fluency and understanding, orchestrating a range of independent strategies to self-monitor and edit

· Develop a range of reading strategies that support and enhance their reading across the wider curriculum

· Read and respond to a variety of texts whilst developing an increased level of fluency and independence

· Be interested in books and read for enjoyment

· Have a keen interest in words and their meaning, thus developing an increased level of fluency and independence

· Have a suitable technical vocabulary to articulate their responses

· Understand text types and be able to write in a variety of styles and forms appropriate for the intended audience

· Develop their powers of imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness
